Calling all ‘Spoons fans! The UK’s favourite pub chain Wetherspoons have recently unveiled a huge improvement to their longstanding establishment The Windmill, at Stansted Airport.
Revealed to passengers on Wednesday the 3rd of April, the new 3,650 square foot runway bar is built on a mezzanine level towards the back of the existing pub, and accommodates 200 seated customers. The redevelopment has cost £1.3 million, and features a 30-metre-long window which gives a great view of both departing and arriving planes.
The new bar will serve six real ales at all times as well as an ever changing range of beers from local and regional breweries and microbreweries. The stock will also feature craft beers & larger from around the world. For non-alcoholic options, the site will also feature new self-serving coffee machines, offering free-refills on a range of hot drinks.
The Windmill Bar was first opened in March of 2015, costing £2.7 million and was the global winner in the prestigious FAB Awards 2016 ‘airport bar of the year’ it initially replaced the existing wetherspoons site at the time which had been open since 2003.
Richard Cross, Stansted Airport head of retail said: “The Windmill’s new Runway Bar is a fantastic new addition at London Stansted and represents the culmination of phase 1 of the International Departure Lounge enhancement works within our transformation programme.
“The new Runway Bar brings a further 200 seats with excellent views over the runway giving customers and holiday makers breath taking views of all the aircraft as they land, taxi and take off.

The Windmill, which will continue to be managed by Michael Wilkins, who has worked there since 2007, will be employing an additional 40 staff, to the existing 175 members already on the team. The pub opens from 3am until the last flight, everyday.
